Learn about the benefits, limitations and challenges associated with use of the liquid biopsy and of paired germline and tumour-based whole genome sequencing for patients with cancer in the NHS.
They will also share their experience of the use of digital technologies, patient portals and patient apps for education and empowerment of patients with, or at risk of, hereditary predisposition to cancer.
Dr Patrick Tarpey, Clinical Scientist,
Patrick Tarpey trained as a Clinical Scientist in London and Cambridge before moving to the Sanger Institute to pursue research. At Sanger, Patrick worked in the cancer genome group of Mike Stratton, utilising genomic data to explore somatically acquired variation, leading to the discovery of multiple novel cancer genes. Patrick returned to clinical science at CUH to lead the analyses of 100K cancer genomes, and presently as lead scientist for solid cancer within the East GLH. Patrick currently leads a team of scientists utilising genomic assays to evolve cancer services and enhance opportunities for patients across the Eastern region.
Dr Yvonne O Meara, Systemic Psychotherapist and Psychosocial Oncologist
Yvonne O’Meara is a Systemic Psychotherapist and Psychosocial Oncologist. Yvonne has worked as a Medical Social Worker in psychosocial oncology and palliative care since 2004 in teaching hospitals in Ireland and North America.Yvonne is the co-founder of the Irish Society of Gynaecological Oncology Public and Patient Involvement (ISGO-PPI).Yvonne has a special interest in female sexual wellness post a diagnosis of cancer. In 2020 Yvonne took up a post at the UCD School of Medicine as Women’s Cancer Survivorship Research coordinator based in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
Dr Hazel O Sullivan, Thoracic oncology clinical research fellow at the Royal Marsden NHS Trust.
Dr Hazel O’Sullivan is a medical oncologist with a special interest in lung cancer and oncogenetics. She received her Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2021. She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Trials and a Postgraduate Certificate in Cancer Genetics. She has completed a clinical research fellowship in oncogenetics and gynae-oncology and is currently a thoracic oncology clinical research fellow at the Royal Marsden NHS Trust.
Dr Terri McVeigh, Consultant Clinical Geneticist in the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust
Dr Terri McVeigh holds an Honorary Associate Faculty position in the Institute of Cancer Research. Dr McVeigh has a special interest in teaching, and holds a Masters in Clinical Education. She now acts as a core tutor on the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education in NUI Galway. She is also a core tutor of the Molecular Pathology of Cancer and Application in Cancer Diagnosis, Screening, and Treatment Module of the ICR -led MSc in Genomic Medicine (Imperial College London), and regularly supervises and examines postgraduate research projects. She is Clinical Lead for the RCPI Certificate in Cancer Genetics.
